Tinchy Stryder - Off The Record (Feat. Calvin Harris)
Media Language:
The music video has been shot in Las Vegas, this music video is quite literal, as the lyrics do match what happens on screen and what the audience can see. For example; The lyrics are "My Life Is Like A Roller-coaster", the music video has Tinchy on a roller-coaster in Las Vegas, He also mentions Las Vegas in the song. So it means that the audience can actually see what Tinchy wants to bring across, the music video wouldn't match if he was in a different location. The camera angles are also very fast paced and there is lot of cuts within the music video, I think that this represents that his life is so fast paced now, and this is kind of what the song is about, how good his life is now. Also when the roller-coaster scenes come on, the camera pans and follows them everywhere, it also isn't perfect in the way it moves, there are some shakes, so this is trying to show that his life is like a roller-coaster in that it isn't perfect, he does have his ups and downs. Then when it comes to the night scene, the camera again is following him everywhere, like its trying to show a documentary of his life, what its like and what he does and how he likes to party. There is also scenes of just Tinchy singing the lyrics, I think the reason for this is so you see more of the artist, what hes really like and what hes wearing, it also gets your more involved with the lyrics. The shot also of an overview of Las Vegas has lights flashing in it, this shot has been speeded up and creates again a really fast paced movement, showing that his life is fast paced. A scene in the music video is a part also when the music suddenly changes and the scene becomes blurry, then the scenes and cuts start to change, firstly it becomes really slow and things are re winded a little bit, the camera also becomes more shaky and off focus, this represents more of the party scene and because its re winded, it could mean that he wants to do this over and over again, more of the party lifestyle he seems to be leading in the video.

Tinchy Stryder is a 25 year old rapper. He is known for his brand 'Star In The Hood', hes done tracks with N-Dubz, Taio Cruz, Tinie Tempah and Chipmunk. He has had two number one singles in the UK, and is signed to Universal Island Records and also signed to his own label with Jay-Z, Takeover Roc Nation. Tinchy has been on the music scene since 1997, but has only recently in 2007 become known. Tinchy was first a Grime artist, and only rapped, recently though, Tinchy started new things, On his album 'Take Off' there was a mixture of songs including Pop, Grime, and Hip-Hop, but this song 'Off The Record' is something completely different, he has hooked up with Calvin Harris who is massive in the Dance music industry to maybe do something new for Tinchy. Tinchy is also like many other Grime and Dance artists, they find it hard to distribute their music, only channels like 'Channel AKA and Flava' where playing these types of songs but now they are all over the music channels as they are growing more popular with the audience. You also watch his videos on sites like YouTube, where not only do they have his music videos they have behind the scenes looks so you can see more of what Tinchy is really like and also conversations and interviews with him. There is also iTunes where you can buy his music, also sites like HMV, and Amazon where you can buy his music and directly put them on your iPod or phones. Also on iTunes not only can you buy the song but you can buy the video too.
Media Ideology:
This music video is about Tinchy's life. I think that its about how he has come from nothing to being the person that he is today. I think that the roller-coaster represents his life, he does have his ups and downs, there is also spins and things he cant control like in a roller-coaster. This music video is really all about the party lifestyle, so im guessing this is the life he leads now. The video is generally a very happy video, and everyone is dancing and having a good time. There is also gambling, riding around in a flash car, money, and stood on top of the roof in this video, I think that the film 'The Hangover' could have had some influence on this video.
The reason is because 'The Hangover' is also set in Las Vegas, and its all about going on a boys vacation, full of girls, money and alcohol. There is also scenes within the film which are very similar to the Tinchy Stryder video but they have a little UK spin on them, For example, There is the parts where Tinchy is singing the song, on a rooftop, well in The Hangover (Pictured Above) there is a scene where they all go to the top of a Las Vegas hotel rooftop to take shots. It all seems very similar, and I think that Tinchy thought about this when making the music video.
Mise En Scene:
The music video again, is shot in Las Vegas, America. The video also has a very american feel to it, the shots are quite faded and 'dusty' as most american shot films and videos are. There is many props in this video too, there is money, cars, everything seen as flash. There is also scenes in a casino/gambling room with slot machines and money machines, There is also a scene with a cake which is given to Tinchy, this could represent how far hes come and that people are proud of him.The clothes worn in the video are quite casual by Tinchy. In the picture below its shown what he is wearing in different scenes.
In the first picture, this is the clothing he wears when singing the lyrics, and standing on top of the roof in the daylight, he is wearing very casual clothes, which shows he is very relaxed. The colour blue also could represent happiness in a different way, for example 'blue skies' so things are clearing up, also the background is quite sunny and happy so I don't think that the blue represents sadness, if it did, then I think this was the way of representing the ups and downs. In the second picture where he is sat on the bed, again he is wearing casual clothes, with the same chain around his neck, this could represent that he doesn't want to change everything. In the third picture, this is when he goes on the roller-coaster, he again is still very casual, but this is because you wouldn't want to see him in very flashy clothes when hes only going on a ride, it wouldn't fit within the scene, and in the fourth picture which is shot on the night, he does dress to show off his new found fame, the leather jacket looks expensive, and he seems to be wearing more bling jewellery. He also goes well with the colour of the scene and what the night-life in the background looks like.
Example - Natural Disaster (Feat. Laidback Luke)
Media Language:
The video is meant to be about drugs, and the music being like a drug to the boy in the video and he cannot live without it. I think that the video has a very strong message. The shots in the video are very shaky, and in some shots they look like they have been filmed with a hand held camera. There is a lot of pan shots to show that they are following the boy around, and what he can get up to, I also think it makes it seem much more personal, as its getting up and close to the character in the video. The video also has some club scenes in it, and it also some scenes where Example the rapper is in a long shot which a club scene background, where he is in focus more than the background. This video is more narrative and it is trying to get a point across, its not just a boring club scene video. The video does seem very strong, its not a happy video or a sad video, it makes you want to know more and what he is going to get up to. The lighting within the video is very dark, on the streets to show that what he is doing is wrong and that is shouldn't be seen, also when he is in his bedroom, there's a very cold look to it, to show that doing drugs can leave you feeling down and sad.

Laidback Luke is a 35 year old Dutch DJ, he was the one who made the music to this song, The rapper Example, is 29 years old and is from London. Laidback Luke is signed to Mixmash Records, and Example is signed to Data Records. They both are quite different, Laidback Luke is a Dance artist and Example is a Grime/Hip-Hop artist but who has done some Dance Material when he first started out. Example has has a number one album with 'Playing In The Shadows' and Laidback Luke is one of the most well known DJs in the clubbing scene. They way that they both distribute their music is very similar. They are both not signed up to massive record labels, so they have to be careful to get their music known and out there. They both put their music videos on YouTube, this is so more people around the world can see their music, not only the UK, also on their own websites. They bring their music out on music channels too, MTV Dance show their music a lot and do features in which it will say 'Example's Brand New Video' which the dedicate the whole channel to this brand new video for 5 minutes. iTunes again also disturbute their music, where you can buy the song, album and video. iTunes recently have promoted Examples album on their home page (picture below)
Media Ideology:
The video is quite different to most Dance music videos I think, this is because it actually has a meaning, most Dance videos have women in them and they always have lots of party/club scenes, and although this does have a club scene, I think it means more than that. The video is meant to be about drugs and how a person can become dependant on them, but in this video, the music is meant to be the drug. Its telling about addiction and how hard it is to give up. Its also showing the darker sides, like buying drugs. I think that the colours in the music video also show this, as there isn't many bright colours within the video until it gets to the happy club scene, which is where the boys ends up.
Mise En Scene:
The Mise En Scene in this video is very dark. The setting is in a club, the street and in a typical house. The first setting is the club, which is probably the only setting where there is some colour, and flashing lights making the video less boring and dark. The other scenes are all dark, like there is one in the street and of course its night time so its dark, and there is the bedroom scene where the boy takes his dose of music. The bedroom is very boring and simple, its all white, accept the Laidback Luke posters. The 'costumes' are all very different. Laidback Luke (First Picture) is wearing a red t shirt, this could mean love, and love could mean loving the music. In the second picture, the main character is wearing a grey hoodie with a stripey top, the stripey top could represent a mime artist, not being able to speak out and say what they feel. Also, Example the main rapper is wearing a baseball jacket and white t shirt with the word 'CTRL' meaning Control, that the boy cannot control what hes doing.
The whole of the video seems to be pretty dark, because of what it represents, the only time that the video turns slightly colourful is when the club scene happens, and this is because the place is seen as safe to the boy. The rest of the video is dark, like on the streets, his bedroom is brighter but its very simple and plain. I think that the mise en scene within the music video is very strong and does represent a lot. Without any of this it wouldnt make the video as strong as it is and the message wouldnt be as good. The lighting within the club scene is purple, and purple usually represents wealth, you need money to go to a club, just as you do to buy drugs, maybe this is what the video is trying to tell you, also it could mean spirituality, and to do with witches, like black magic, and this means the intention to kill, so it could be trying to tell you that drugs can kill you.
Media Language:
This music video is shot in a dark street, a shop and in a car. The music video is meant to be about saving the world, so doing what the title of the song is, so really the music video again is quite literal, they are doing what the lyrics say. The music video shows the crime and then what the dogs do to help the victims, the video can be quite sad to the audience and also it can make them emphatic, as they might have been a victim of crime or they might have a dog and find the video cute. There is a lot of slow camera shots in this video, its been slowed down a lot, this is so it adds more tension to the video and so that its not just quick and over with, it really makes you think about what's happening. There is also a lot of special effects within the video, for example when the car spins over, this is done by special effects but still looks realistic, and I think that they wanted this look in the video, none of it looks too fake. There is a pause in the video, and it only lasts 2 seconds, this is when the shot is just a black background, after the 2 second pause it goes onto the victims after the crime has happened, and this is when the dog comforts them, without that pause, none of the video would have flowed as well as it does, it makes you think more as well about the characters within the video, then you also know that change is going to happen in the video and it does, the dogs come and help the victim's.
Media Institution:
Swedish House Mafia is a trio of DJ's, Axwell, Steve Angello, and Sebastian, which all formed in late 2008. They are signed to Virgin Records and have worked with various other artists including Pharell Williams on their single 'One' and also Tinie Tempah on 'Miami 2 Ibiza'. How they distribute their music is quite different to how other artists do it. They distribute it through music channels; so MTV Dance will play their songs on a regular basis, this is because this the the genre of music they play a lot, and also Swedish House Mafia are all famous DJ's, so they already know about distributing their music through music channels, and its worked well for them before. They also distribute it through YouTube, and post all of their new videos on there, and also on iTunes where you can buy the songs and videos. They distribute the music differently because they do a lot of their advertising on their actual official website, its also where you get to know when tickets are on sale, by doing this its also making new fans go on their website and find out more about them and maybe buy some more of their music.
Media Ideology
This music video is all about crime and about what's happening in society I think. Crime is always going on and this music video highlights what can happen on a day to day basis. Although its abstract with the dogs its still realistic, as crime is real. The video is also meant to show that animals also have feelings and know about what's going on. They are also not your typical superhero's, so this adds interest to the video, they must have done sort of research too, because on most questionnaires, most people prefer dogs to cats, so they chose the right animal for the part.
Mise En Scene
The setting of the music video is shot in a dark street and within a shop. There are several characters in the video. One of the sets of characters is the two girls walking home. One is wearing a red dress, which could mean danger, danger of what's going to happen, the other girl is wearing a khaki green coat, khaki is something men in the army have to wear, so this could also represent that she is strong and that she will get through what has happened to her, she is also leaning against a red wall again representing danger. Another character is the boy who works in the shop, now he is wearing a plain black t-shirt, this could represent a time of darkness for the boy, because also later on in the video, the boy is sat down looking very lonely, so at the time of the crime the boy could be feeling very lonely and scared, he is also wearing a white apron, this represents innocence, and this boy is innocent, he hasn't done anything wrong, but is still the victim of a crime, he is also wearing jeans and sneakers, so his dressed very casual to show that he earning a living, and that hes lower class, and that these thugs are trying to stop him from earning a living. All of the thugs in the video are wearing black hats or balaclavas, this again is to represent darkness, to blend in with dark and to try and not be seen to other people. They also are wearing very dark colours, again this is because they don't want to be seen or blend in with society. The dogs in the video are all lightly coloured, none of the dogs have very dark fur, this is to show they are the good guys in the video and that they also bringing safety to the victims.
